UX DESIGN // 2024
Big Red is an independent advertising agency based in Melbourne, with a working team of 50-70 employees.
Employees weren’t interested in using the intranet – the online employee handbook – even though it contained essential information like upcoming events, professional resources and contact details. It was cumbersome and unattractive.
It was also a chore to update the intranet from the back end. This meant content was often out of date, with Christmas-themed staff pictures sometimes lasting into February!
The intranet isn’t just an information dump. It’s a community hub.
I designed a new intranet that’s user friendly with clear navigation pathways and strong visual hierarchy. I added little rewards – like fun GIFs and dynamic text – to encourage employees to keep checking in.
And I built the new intranet as a prototype in Figma so it’s easy for anyone to update – not just developers.
I pitched my new intranet to the CEO and CDO, and was delighted when they bought it with no changes!
This project saw a massive increase in employees using the new intranet. It became a exciting place for people to go for information, rather than a frustrating user experience. I have countless stories of people telling me how much easier it is to use and that it's just more fun than what came before it. I was able to unburden a developer of time consuming updates and train our operations manager in how to make updates going forward. This is by far the most creative I’ve been on a project, because it was completely proactive and self led. I was met with only positive feedback from the CEO and CDO who backed my design entirely.
