UX DESIGN // 2023
BHP is the largest mining company in the world. It is recognised for its commitment to producing resources like copper, nickel and iron ore that will be used to help build a better future.
During my time at Big Red, I was the UX and digital designer for BHP.
Despite a well-established recruiting program, BHP was experiencing low application numbers. Research found their careers website was difficult to navigate and didn’t accurately depict the BHP experience.
The website needed to reflect the diversity of jobs – ranging from new-to-industry engineering opportunities to experienced mining positions in 90+ global locations – to attract a more diverse talent pool.
Collaborating with the BHP development team, agency copywriters and the client, I worked to redesign the global careers section of the website.
This involved:
Simplifying navigation pathways so users could easily find their geographic-specific destination e.g. global careers in Canada
Adjusting page layouts so images and text would responsively adapt to the user’s device
Talks with the client to investigate user priorities
Re-invention of copy to scan more easily
Selecting imagery with a focus on diversity and higher quality
Designing subtle, brand-appropriate animation for select website elements
Building from low to high fidelity wireframes
This redesign was hugely successful in that the client and all global stakeholders were completely satisfied with the outcome. Unfortunately there wasn’t a budget for insights post website redesign. But given the opportunity, I would've liked to know the increase in click through rate to the careers portal and the number of applications. In particular it would’ve been good to test how each country reacted to the new design to see if there was anything country specific that still needed tweaking.
This was my first website redesign of a large scale company. I created high fidelity prototypes, I ran feedback sessions with the client and stakeholders and I worked with their in house dev team to align with their templates. I learnt so much throughout this project and I'm very proud of the outcome.
